Ground Search and Rescue – Basic Course
28.03.2026 klo 9.00 - 17.00 VaasaTarget Group
The course is intended for anyone interested in the activities of the Volunteer Rescue Service (Vapepa).
Why Is Training in Missing Person Search Important?
In 1963, the disappearance of a five-year-old child in northern Finland led to a large-scale search involving hundreds of volunteers. Despite their efforts, the lack of training and coordination became painfully evident, and the child was found too late. This tragedy led to the establishment of the Volunteer Rescue Service (Vapepa) and highlights why proper search training is essential. This course equips volunteers with the knowledge and skills needed to act effectively, safely and in cooperation with the authorities when every moment counts.
Learning Outcomes
After completing the course, participants will be able to:
Describe the operating principles of the Volunteer Rescue Service (Vapepa) as a network of organisations cooperating with authorities
Apply basic missing person search methods in ground search operations
Operate safely and effectively under a leadership as part of a ground search and rescue alert group
Prepare appropriately for a search alert and act in accordance with given instructions
Explain the structure and core functions of Vapepa and its role in supporting authorities
Identify Vapepa activities and emergency groups in their own local area
Communicate clearly about Vapepa activities to individuals interested in voluntary rescue work
These learning outcomes provide participants with the knowledge and skills required to take part in organised volunteer search and rescue activities, without creating an obligation to join an alert group.
The course includes:
- Theoretical instruction
- Guided practical search exercises in terrain
Participants will receive a certificate upon completion. Continued participation in future search exercises is strongly recommended.
